The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, directed by Poli Suárez, continues to advance in improving care for students with specific educational support needs (NEAE) in Fuerteventura, with a progressive reinforcement of human resources, new projects and greater involvement of families in the educational system. In this context, the general director of Teaching Planning, Inclusion and Innovation, David Pablos, together with the insular director of Education, Yurena Pérez, and the inspector general, Marcos Rodríguez, held a meeting this Tuesday with representatives of the Federation of Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students (AMPA) of Fuerteventura and families of NEAE students, with the aim of analyzing the evolution of available resources and collecting proposals for improvement. Pablos stressed that “this type of meeting allows us to listen first-hand to families, share with transparency what we are doing and continue building together a more inclusive educational system adjusted to the real needs of the students.” In this sense, he highlighted that “in this legislature we have made an important leap in resources, organization and focus, placing inclusion as one of the central axes of educational policy.” The general director explained that the increase in personnel has been one of the main advances on the island, with a significant improvement in the number of educational assistants, guidance professionals and Hearing and Language specialists, which has allowed us to reinforce direct attention to students and improve the educational response in the centers. The meeting took place in a relaxed atmosphere and constructive dialogue between the educational administration and families, in which each party was able to express their approaches and concerns about the care of students with specific educational support needs on the island. During the meeting, a review of the main educational needs detected in Fuerteventura was also carried out and it was agreed to establish new joint lines of work between families, the Island Directorate of Education and the Educational Inspection Service with the aim of improving and unifying the attention provided to NEAE students in the different educational centers on the island. The families positively valued the reinforcement of resources registered in the last years and indicated that, in general, there is no lack of resources in the centers, although they raised the need to reinforce supervision and monitoring in the management of these resources to guarantee their optimal functioning. More resources Throughout the archipelago, the Ministry has significantly increased the resources allocated to assisting NEAE, currently exceeding 1,850 educational assistants, which means having doubled this figure compared to the 2022/2023 academic year. This reinforcement has also been accompanied by an increase in specialized teaching staff, with nearly 3,400 professionals in the current academic year, as well as an increase in global investment allocated to this area, consolidating a firm commitment to educational inclusion. In the specific case of Fuerteventura, this evolution also translates into the development of specific projects, such as the increase in centers with inclusion initiatives for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which have gone from one to three in recent years, thus expanding the coverage and specialization of the educational response on the island. During the meeting, training actions aimed at families, reinforced in recent years as part of a comprehensive support strategy, were also addressed. These initiatives seek to provide mothers and fathers with tools to better understand the needs of their sons and daughters and to actively collaborate with educational centers. The meeting also assessed the possible implementation of the NEAE+21 program on the island, a pioneering initiative aimed at improving the care of students with greatest support needs once their compulsory educational stage ends, always based on existing demand. Another aspect discussed was the supervision process that is being developed in all Enclave classrooms of the archipelago, in coordination with the Educational Inspection Service, with the aim of guaranteeing the quality of the service, evaluating the adequacy of resources and collecting information that allows for continued improvement in student care. Finally, the Ministry is working on the development of a new bullying protocol, which will soon be shared with the educational community for their analysis and contributions, thus reinforcing coexistence policies in the centers.
