Enrique Pérez: “The Role of the Governing Body in Betancuria is Quite Challenging”

Challenges in Local Governance: A Closer Look at the Current Situation

In the small municipality facing significant challenges, local governance appears to be diminished, leaving just two active council members – Mayor Enrique Cerdeña and Councilor José Cerdeña. A third council member, part of the governing group, remains inactive, which according to Pérez, severely hampers the municipality’s ability to manage pressing issues. This situation has become even more critical as the community navigates a particularly delicate period.

Concerns Over Decision-Making

Pérez does not shy away from addressing the root of the problem. He expresses that the departure of the deputy mayor was expected, directly challenging the decision-making processes within the governing body. “Many decisions are made from above, and they are decisions that nobody understands,” he asserts. His remarks indicate a broader dissatisfaction with the transparency and accountability of the local government, suggesting a disconnect between the leadership and the community’s needs.

Educational Initiatives and Community Needs

One of the pressing concerns highlighted by Pérez relates to educational services, a topic championed by Councilor Esperanza González. She, along with nationalist representatives, advocates for the establishment of school cafeterias in small schools. There’s a notable lack of response from the council regarding her request for approximately €30,000 to facilitate this service at the most populated school in Valle de Santa Inés.

“We believe it is essential for the survival of unitary schools,” Pérez argues forcefully. He emphasizes that the absence of services such as cafeterias or early care hampers families’ ability to balance work and home life. This lack of support could further contribute to the alarming trend of depopulation within the municipality, as families seek opportunities in areas with better resources.

Financial Discrepancies in Resource Allocation

In contrast to the council’s refusal to fund the school cafeteria initiative, Pérez points to other expenditures that raise eyebrows. He references an investment of over €20,000 into a school in Vega del Río Palmas, a facility that has been closed for over 15 years and is slated to be repurposed as a hostel. “It doesn’t make sense,” he summarizes, reflecting a sense of bewilderment regarding the rationale behind these financial decisions.

This apparent inconsistency in how public funds are allocated raises critical questions about the strategic priorities of the local government. Pérez‘s observations highlight what he sees as a lack of coherence in managing community resources, pointing to a need for a more transparent and needs-focused governance approach.

The Road Ahead for Local Governance

As the community grapples with these pressing issues, the narrative surrounding local governance is increasingly fraught with uncertainty. The limited active council, challenges in decision-making transparency, and critical needs in educational and community services all paint a complex picture. The voices of those like Pérez and Esperanza González serve as reminders of the ongoing struggles faced by municipalities striving to support their constituents effectively during challenging times.
