In a recent critique, significant attention has been drawn to the PP of Tuineje for what has been described as an unfounded claim to the expansion of local infrastructure. The speaker expressed his disappointment, stating, «I would like them to be more responsible and not treat the citizens as if they are stupid or incapable of reflection». He emphasized that what the PP did was merely a «simple request that any citizen could make», illustrating a disconnect between political posturing and actual contributions.
Over the past two years and four months, López has led Puertos Canarios in Fuerteventura and has initiated seven significant projects in Gran Tarajal. Among these is the much-needed improvement of the electrical installation, which had previously been non-compliant with regulations and had caused frequent issues. Another priority on the agenda is the sewage water pumping network, which has been integrated into the infrastructure planning set for 2026, necessary for meeting environmental mandates.
Morro Jable: Marina Jandía Projects and Comprehensive Port Renovation
Moving on to Morro Jable, López Alonso has laid out an ambitious future project. This initiative includes five completed or contracted works, such as the renovation of restrooms, lighting improvements, removal of abandoned boats, and the demolition of the old service station. Puertos Canarios is planning a minimum investment of 15 million euros aimed at renewing both the surface and the water body of the port. «We have a rather ambitious project», he explained, detailing enhancements to open spaces, road access, dock areas, protective breakwaters, and improved organization between the fishing guild and the nautical school.
The vision for Morro Jable also encompasses the creation of parking facilities, commercial areas, and a “much more user-friendly promenade for port visitors”, with plans to clear vehicles and campervans from the waterfront. Additionally, indirect investments are already underway, including a multi-energy station with over six million euros allocated, alongside projects like Marina de Jandía that López Alonso believes will mark a substantial turning point. In total, he spoke of current investments surpassing 18 million euros, with plans for future comprehensive renovations adding another 15 million.
Moreover, Morro Jable stands to gain from enhanced connectivity. López noted, «The arrival of Baleària is excellent news. We had lost weekday connectivity, but now we have seven daily rotations solely from Morro Jable», a significant improvement for both locals and tourists alike.
Corralejo: More than Just Temporary Fixes Awaiting a Thoughtful Project
In Corralejo, the director defended the works executed against criticism labeling them as superficial “patches”. He highlighted that Puertos Canarios focuses on short- and mid-term actions, while significant expansions are within the realm of Public Works. He asserted that eight initiatives have been carried out or are in the pipeline, including pavement renewal, railings, lighting upgrades, and enhancements to the terminal—whose façade had been described as “pitiful.”
Looking ahead, a new bid of half a million euros is set to be issued for new restrooms, ticket sales booths, and shaded areas near the boatyard. López Alonso also touched on a long-awaited major project that has been put out to tender twice without success. He explained, “The previous project from the last legislative term doesn’t meet the Ministry’s requirements.”
Consequently, efforts are being made to revise the plan for a more environmentally sensitive proposal that respects the Corralejo bay and adheres to the demands for regular passenger lines to Playa Blanca. He cautioned, “We shouldn’t deceive the public. A much less invasive project can meet current and future demands for regular passenger service.”
In parallel, Puertos Canarios is advancing on the construction of the breakwater in Corralejo, which is budgeted at 3.5 million euros. The project is ready and awaiting environmental processing. He affirmed, “We have the budget and the funds to execute it immediately,” however, all necessary procedures must first be adhered to.
