How eco-tourism is unlocking new economic opportunities for Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, is carving out a niche for itself in the world of eco-tourism, positioning the island as a sustainable travel destination. This shift not only enhances the island’s appeal but also provides a significant boost to the local economy. With increasing global awareness around environmental responsibility, Fuerteventura is embracing its natural landscapes, rich biodiversity, and pristine beaches, all while fostering a tourism model that prioritizes sustainability.

Local businesses are adapting to this green wave by offering authentic experiences that celebrate the island’s unique ecology. From guided nature hikes and organic farm tours to eco-friendly accommodations and water sports that respect marine life, entrepreneurs are innovating ways to attract environmentally-conscious travelers. The Cabildo of Fuerteventura held this Friday, March 6, the institutional event on the occasion of International Women’s Day (8M) in collaboration with the La Oliva City Council. The meeting took place at the Raíz del Pueblo Cultural Center, where institutional representatives and citizens demanded progress towards a more egalitarian society. One of the central moments of the event was the reading of the institutional manifesto, which was carried out by a worker from the La Oliva City Council, an elderly person from the municipality and a student from IES La Oliva representing the youth. The text reaffirmed the collective commitment of Majorera society to equality and recalled the role of women in building a more just society. “Today we recognize the value of all, of those who were, those who are and those who will come. Because when we recognize the value of all, we strengthen the value of our society,” stated the manifesto. Recognition of the role of women The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, highlighted the importance of recognizing the efforts of women who have contributed to the progress of the island. “If today we are closer to equality, it is thanks to many women who preceded us. Women who lived in a much more limited society, who worked without recognition and who supported entire families, moving this island forward with a strength that was almost never recognized,” she said. Along the same lines, the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, stressed that each advance towards greater equality has been possible thanks to the work of many women. “Mothers, workers, entrepreneurs, students and neighbors committed to their island have opened paths so that the generations that come after them can find a future with more opportunities,” he stated. Equality as a social pillar For his part, the Councilor for Social Action, Víctor Alonso, recalled that equality policies are fundamental to building a just society. As explained, these policies materialize in care, prevention and awareness programs, in educational initiatives and in the strengthening of the island’s network of resources to support victims of gender violence. Likewise, the Councilor for Social Services of La Oliva, Joana Pérez, reaffirmed the institutional commitment to promoting public policies that contribute to progress towards real equality. “Equality is built with perseverance, education and responsibility,” he said. Culture and youth participation The institutional event also included different cultural and educational performances, including poetry readings by the students of IES La Oliva, a contemporary dance performance by the Danza y Arte group Marta Equeter, as well as musical performances by the institute’s students and the singer Coralia. With this meeting, the Majorera institutions wanted to vindicate the value of women in society and reinforce the collective commitment to equal opportunities.
