Discovering Isla de Lobos: A Hidden Gem near Fuerteventura
When traveling to Fuerteventura, one of the most remarkable experiences is a visit to Isla de Lobos. This small island, located just off the coast of Corralejo, is a sanctuary of natural beauty, rich history, and unique landscapes that will leave you longing for more. My trip to Fuerteventura was made unforgettable by the charm of Isla de Lobos, and in this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know to plan your visit.
Getting There: How to Reach Isla de Lobos
The most common way to reach Isla de Lobos is by taking a ferry from Corralejo. The journey is quick, lasting about 15-20 minutes, and provides stunning views of the surrounding waters. You can easily reserve your ferry spot through various online platforms, but I found it convenient to book a ticket where they also handled the necessary permissions, making my journey hassle-free.
Important Note on Access
Since 2019, access to Isla de Lobos is limited to 400 visitors per day, divided into two time slots: morning (10:00 to 14:00) and afternoon (14:00 to 18:00). This limitation is in place to protect the delicate ecosystem of the island. Ensure you obtain your Lobos Pass in advance — it’s free but must be requested no more than five days prior to your visit.
Embracing the Untouched Nature
Isla de Lobos covers an area of nearly 5 square kilometers and has no permanent residents or roads. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme. With its stunning rock formations, sandy beaches, and a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, this island has been designated a Biosphere Reserve. Visitors can glimpse breathtaking landscapes that seem to have been untouched by time.
What to See: Highlights of Isla de Lobos
Upon arriving, a quick stop at the Visitor Center gives you insight into the island’s vibrant ecosystem. You’ll find fascinating information about the unique plants and animals that call Isla de Lobos home, including its historical ties to the now-extinct monk seals.
Playa de La Concha
One of the most stunning spots on the island is Playa de La Concha. Shaped like a crescent, this beach boasts crystal-clear waters and is a perfect spot for swimming and relaxation. It’s often considered the best beach on the island, thanks to its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.
Montaña La Caldera
For those feeling adventurous, a hike up Montaña La Caldera is a must. At 127 meters, it’s the highest point on the island and offers panoramic views that are simply breathtaking. If you have time, the views of the Dunes of Corralejo and the surrounding sea are worth the hike.
Faro de Punta Martiño
The Punta Martiño Lighthouse, operational since 1865, stands as a testament to the island’s maritime history. The walk to the lighthouse is lined with picturesque volcanic landscapes, making it a delightful trek for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
Las Lagunitas
Don’t overlook Las Lagunitas, a collection of small saltwater lagoons teeming with birdlife. Even if they’re dry during your visit, they’re a great spot for birdwatching and observing endemic flora, such as the unique sea lavender.
Dining on the Island
While options are limited, the restaurant operated by Antoñito el Farero offers a charming dining experience. They serve a variety of local dishes, including a well-recommended paella. If you’re short on time, consider enjoying snacks at the beach to maximize your hours on the island.
Planning Your Adventure
Before setting out, remember to:
- Bring plenty of water and snacks, as amenities are limited.
- Wear sunscreen, a hat, and good walking shoes; the island has little shade.
- Plan your timing to ensure you can see all the highlights without feeling rushed.
