Regan Potenza, Artisan: “Fuerteventura is Inspiring”

The Artistic Journey of FuerteMente Arcoíris: Regan Potenza’s Love Affair with Fuerteventura

A New Beginning in Paradise

FuerteMente Arcoíris is the artistic name of Italian artisan Regan Potenza, who has found her passion in creating unique jewelry, decorations, and decorative objects from polymer clay and resin. Two years ago, she made the life-altering decision to relocate to Fuerteventura, an enchanting island that stole her heart on her first visit over a decade ago. “It felt like the most beautiful place in the world,” she recalls, captivated by its nature, ocean, tranquility, relaxed lifestyle, and rich cultural tapestry—a blend that only a multi-ethnic island can offer.

Finding Home in Fuerteventura

Regan’s journey to Fuerteventura began more than ten years ago when she first traveled there as a tourist. The island resonated deeply with her, igniting a connection that pulled her back at least twice a year. This enchantment culminated in her choosing to invest in a home in Costa Antigua, a residence with stunning sea views that she now shares with her partner after her son gained independence. “Every day, I wake up to a spectacular view,” Regan says joyfully.

Fuerteventura serves as her “constant source of inspiration,” where every sunset, sunrise, beach, and color feeds her creativity. “Every location evokes emotions that enrich me as nothing else can. Trying to reproduce this beauty in my creations is a magical process,” she adds.

Nurturing Artistic Passions

Regan’s artistic roots can be traced back to her childhood, where she cultivated a love for art and miniatures. “I drew, built painted LEGO houses, created miniatures from clay, and cherished all forms of creativity,” she reflects. Her journey led her to work as a decorator and restorer for two fulfilling years, but when the workshop she worked at closed, she pivoted to a career in fashion. For over twenty years, she managed a purchasing office for leather goods—a demanding yet satisfying role.

Despite the challenges of her day job, Regan never strayed far from her artistic passions. She continued restoring furniture for personal use, crafting miniature creations, and painting. As friends began to recognize her talent, word spread about her work, prompting her to showcase her pieces at artisan markets on weekends—a turning point in her career. “I couldn’t stop; even with a demanding job during the week, my free moments were dedicated to creativity and art,” she explains.

The Essence of FuerteMente Arcoíris

The name FuerteMente Arcoíris cleverly combines “fuerte” (strong) and “mente” (mind) with “rainbow,” one of Regan’s favorite elements. “To me, the rainbow represents the ultimate expression of colors and, consequently, of art,” she shares passionately. “I wanted ‘Fuerteventura’ to be part of my name, as it is part of my heart and mind.” This connection embodies her spirit, emphasizing how she lives, dreams, laughs, sings, and fights with tenacity.

Her unique creations include vibrant, rainbow-colored treasures, such as restored vintage suitcases that are reimagined with pastel hues. “I am immensely proud of the name I chose because it truly represents me one hundred percent,” she says.

Crafting Memories and Emotions

A hallmark of Regan’s work is the passion and creativity infused into each piece. Her clients appreciate this unique quality, describing their experiences as being captivated by entire worlds held within her creations. “Knowing that someone is about to take a piece of my heart home is the greatest satisfaction,” she expresses, reflecting on how much she values her clientele, who are often kind, curious, and deeply engaged.

Every Sunday, Regan showcases her work at the artisan market at Oasis Park in La Lajita, and participates in the Lajares market every two to three Saturdays. She appreciates the beautiful environment of La Lajita, while her enthusiasm for Lajares stems from years of anticipation. “I eagerly waited for Saturdays to run there and buy art from exceptional artisans,” she reminisces. A special bond forms between artists, and for Regan, the encouragement from a fellow artist, Betty, has been pivotal. “Without her belief in me, I would never have had the courage to present my work in Lajares.”

The Uniqueness of Each Creation

Regan passionately believes that every handcrafted piece is unique and irreplaceable, carrying the essence of its creator. “Each item contains the story of who made it—life, emotions, sleepless nights spent pondering how to craft a specific object or achieve the perfect color,” she explains. Dedicating at least ten hours a day to her craft, she allows herself to be guided by the inspiration of the moment. “If creating a miniature house necklace takes six hours, I invest that time because my creations must perfectly match my imagination,” she insists.

The richness of Fuerteventura extends beyond its breathtaking landscapes; Regan revels in the opportunity to connect with diverse cultures and traditions. “I enrich myself every time I meet a new person,” she remarks, though she longs to master the language further to express herself as eloquently as she does in her native tongue.

Gratitude for Life’s Mosaic

Regan’s enthusiasm and gratitude for life shine through in her words. “I consider myself very fortunate and am thankful for this paradise, the island, and all the fantastic people I’ve met. They allow me to live the life I always dreamed of,” she concludes, embodying the spirit of a true artisan whose heart is forever intertwined with the island that inspired her journey.

Through her artistry and the vibrant essence of FuerteMente Arcoíris, Regan Potenza continues to enchant those who encounter her work, weaving a rich tapestry of emotion, beauty, and connection that resonates far beyond the shores of Fuerteventura.
