Restaurant Review: Amor on Amoy Street

Discovering Amor: A Taste of Spain in Singapore

The Place

Nestled at 107 Amoy Street, Amor is a newly opened Spanish restaurant that brings a slice of Spain to Singapore. The brainchild of the former head chef and general manager of Olivia, Amor’s interior is a feast for the eyes. Inspired by Catalan modernism and the whimsical designs of Gaudí, the restaurant features curved arches and a series of intimate spaces that invite diners to relax and enjoy their meals. The centerpiece is a stunning trencadis mosaic bar, perfect for those who fancy a drink while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

The Food

Amor’s menu is a delightful exploration of Spanish cuisine, offering a diverse array of dishes that cater to various palates. Expect to find 10 tapas creations starting from S$9, along with lunch sets priced at S$38++ for those working nearby. It’s worth noting that some of the images in this review may not accurately reflect the actual size of the dishes, as they are tasting portions.

Tapas Highlights

To kick off my culinary journey, I sampled a few tapas items. The Ostra ‘A La Barsa’ (S$10) features fresh oysters drizzled with a tangy escabeche sauce, while the Jamon Iberico Croquettes (S$14) boast a creamy béchamel sauce enveloped in a crispy potato crust. Another standout was the Gambas AI Ajillo (S$34), where sashimi-grade prawns are gently cooked in fragrant garlic oil, delivering a burst of flavor with every bite.

One of my personal favorites was the Happy Eggggg (S$18). This unique dish is served in a martini glass and features layers of truffle sabayon, a 65°C onsen egg, roasted pumpkin coulis, crispy jamon chips, and brown butter sourdough croutons, all topped with a fresh chervil and dill salad. Mixing it all together results in a harmonious blend of flavors that is simply delightful.

Protein and Carbs

For protein, the Wagyu Short Ribs (S$34) are a must-try. The thinly sliced beef is charcoal-grilled to perfection and served with a buttery sauce that enhances its rich flavor.

When it comes to carbs, the Lobster Arroz Meloso (S$76) is a standout dish. Featuring a barbecued whole lobster, the rice is moist and flavorful, making it a comforting choice for seafood lovers.

Desserts

No meal is complete without dessert, and Amor does not disappoint. The Bombas (S$10) may look like a classic Catalan croquette, but it surprises with its cold, creamy ice cream center, encased in panko feuilletine and served with a white chocolate crème fraise ‘aioli’ and a dab of paprika gel.

Another signature dessert is the Hazelnut & Almond Lava Cake (S$18), which features a warm molten center that contrasts beautifully with the cold ice cream. However, I found it a tad too sweet for my liking.

If you can only indulge in one dessert, I highly recommend the Basque Burnt Cheesecake (S$16). This creamy delight is made from a blend of various cheeses, including blue cheese, and offers a rich texture without being overly pungent.

Rants

While the flavors of the dishes are generally enjoyable, I found them to be somewhat passable and not particularly memorable.

Will I Return Again?

Amor offers a relaxed dining vibe that strikes a balance between formal and casual. The space is ideal for small group gatherings or intimate dinners, where you can opt for tapas and drinks if you’re not in the mood for a full meal.
