Celebrating Craftsmanship: The 37th Insular Craft Fair in Antigua
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is set to enhance the island’s vibrant cultural scene with a dedicated budget of €100,000 for the XXXVII Insular Craft Fair. Scheduled for May 7 to 10 in the picturesque town of Antigua, this event promises to be a highlight on the cultural calendar, bringing together a diversity of artisans and showcasing the rich craftsmanship of the island.
A Hub for Local Artisans
Anticipation is building as over 200 artisans are expected to participate in this year’s fair. Organised by the Ayuntamiento de Antigua, in collaboration with the Colectivo Mafasca, the event highlights the significance of craftsmanship in Fuerteventura’s cultural landscape. Each artisan will present their unique creations, ranging from pottery to textiles, embodying the island’s artistic spirit. Such occasions not only foster community but also give artisans a platform to connect with a broader audience.
Growing Institutional Support
The commitment to supporting this event has seen a remarkable increase in funding over the last three years. Lola García, the president of the Cabildo, and Lolina Negrín, the councillor for Crafts, underscored their dedication to the fair’s success during a recent presentation. This financial backing is more than just numbers; it’s a commitment to preserve and promote local traditions and crafts. With an aim to enhance the visibility and commercial viability of artisanal products, the Cabildo’s efforts reflect a deep respect for the cultural heritage of Fuerteventura.
Honoring Craftsmanship
The fair also serves as a platform to celebrate individual artisans. This year, the spotlight will be on Bernhard Glauser, who has been awarded the Insular Craft Award for 2026. With over three decades of experience in goldsmithing and jewelry-making, Glauser’s work is deeply influenced by the landscapes and identity of Fuerteventura, making his recognition particularly poignant for local culture.
Traditional Techniques on Display
A unique feature this year is the Cabildo’s institutional stand, which will highlight traditional Majorcan hatmaking. The exhibition will showcase pieces from the island’s ethnographic collection and artworks created by students from the EnRedArte program. This initiative focuses on the revival of traditional crafts, ensuring these skills are passed down through generations. Visitors can expect a variety of hats that exemplify both heritage and creativity, fostering appreciation for this unique craft.
Showcasing Local Masters
In a bid to further celebrate the island’s artisans, the craft fair will also introduce an exciting project dedicated to inventory and cataloging the works of master carpenter José Melián Martín. Coordinated by conservator Lorenzo Mateo Castañeyra, this initiative aims to highlight Melián’s contributions to the island’s craft scene. By cataloging his works, the project seeks to preserve the legacy of this artisanal master, thus enriching Fuerteventura’s artisan narrative.
A Cultural Meeting Point
As the XXXVII Insular Craft Fair approaches, it reinforces its role as a vital showcase for local talent and a gathering space for sharing and celebrating the rich traditions that define Fuerteventura. Visitors and locals alike can look forward to an experience that is not only about purchasing handmade goods but also about engaging with the island’s artistic community, discovering traditional techniques, and deepening their appreciation for the rich tapestry of Fuerteventura’s cultural heritage.
This year’s fair promises to be an unmissable occasion, embodying a spirit of creativity, heritage, and community engagement that shines brightly in Fuerteventura’s vibrant cultural landscape.
