Revitalizing Breña Baja: The Call for Action on Plaza Antigua

Reopening the Church of San José Sparks New Initiatives

The recent reopening of the historic Church of San José has served as a catalyst for local political action in Breña Baja. The Socialist Municipal Group has announced their intention to present a motion at the upcoming plenary session aimed at revitalizing the surrounding area, particularly the neglected Plaza Antigua, its stage, and stairway. This initiative comes in response to what they describe as a lack of prioritization from the local government. According to a press release from the PSOE, the government has missed crucial opportunities to intervene in this significant historical environment.

Significance of the Church’s Reopening

The PSOE is keen to underline the importance of the church, identifying it as one of the most valuable heritage elements in the municipality. Ana García, the Socialist spokesperson, emphasized that its reopening should mark a pivotal time for improvement in the public spaces surrounding it. “This is a moment to genuinely reclaim this environment,” she asserted, voicing disappointment that the government has shown little inclination to act on this matter.

Current State of Plaza Antigua

The party has raised concerns about the existing condition of Plaza Antigua, which, located centrally next to the Town Hall, showcases a scene of neglect. The stage and stairway adjoining the plaza are currently propped up and exhibit significant deterioration, including moisture issues and exposed iron beams. These problems paint a disheartening image for what should be a celebrated historical nexus in the community. The PSOE argues that such a state is wholly unworthy of a historical site that ought to be preserved and celebrated.

Missed Opportunities and Community Frustration

The situation becomes even more poignant when considering that the revitalization of the plaza was previously supported by funding from the Cabildo Insular de La Palma’s cooperation plan. Unfortunately, execution delays over the last four years saw the funds postponed multiple times, only to be reallocated for different projects, such as the San Antonio skate park. The Socialists lament the loss of this opportunity, resulting in the current dilapidated state of a key community space.

Positive Changes Amid Neglect

Despite the disappointment about the plaza, the PSOE is enthusiastic about the church’s reopening itself. This restoration, which included work on the high altar’s retablo, was made possible by contributions from local donors and the Cabildo’s support. According to the PSOE, this development signals that robust efforts can yield positive results when there is genuine political will.

The Broader Vision for Tourism and Community Life

The Socialist Group argues that effective tourism promotion stems from maintaining Breña Baja’s public spaces all year round. They advocate for management strategies that prioritize both heritage preservation and the upkeep of public areas, forming a crucial part of a thriving community identity and experience.

Budgeting for the Future

Looking ahead, the Socialist Group is committed to pushing for the inclusion of plaza revitalization in the municipal budget. There’s frustration over the fact that the budget for 2026 hasn’t even been presented for discussion in council meetings. The PSOE insists that Breña Baja cannot afford to operate without clear plans and priorities, pushing the narrative that thoughtful governance is vital for the community’s future.

In this vibrant local context, the future of Breña Baja appears to hinge on the conversations happening in the upcoming plenary session and the call to action ignited by the reopening of the Church of San José.
