Fuerteventura en Música: Celebrating Two Decades of Cultural Vibrancy

The Fuerteventura en Música festival, fondly celebrated as FEM, is making a spirited return to the stunning Playa de La Concha on July 3rd and 4th. This year, the festival proudly commemorates its 20th edition, a remarkable milestone since its inception in 2004. Over the years, FEM has blossomed into a cornerstone of cultural activity in the Canary Islands, drawing music enthusiasts and artists from various backgrounds.

A Formidable Opening

The festival’s official announcement was graced by influential figures including Lola García, the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura; Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva; Rayco León, the insular cultural advisor; and David Hernández, the councilor of culture. Their presence underscores the festival’s significance not just as an entertainment event, but as a celebration of the island’s artistic spirit.

Honoring a Visionary

This year’s edition carries a poignant tribute to Dania Dévora, a pioneering force behind the festival who revitalized its artistic direction before passing away on March 25. During the launch, García highlighted Dévora’s unwavering commitment to the festival’s core values: multiculturalism, environmental awareness, cultural syncretism, and a deep respect for the natural surroundings.

Following her passing, her son, Sergio Miró, took on the mantle of artistic direction, ensuring that her vision continues to resonate throughout the festival.

A Festival with Identity

Part of the official reveal included recorded reflections from Dania Dévora herself, illuminating her vision for FEM as a festival with its own distinct identity—one that stands apart from fleeting trends and remains firmly rooted in cultural and territorial integrity.

Cultural Significance

Mayor Isaí Blanco emphasized the festival’s role in positioning El Cotillo as a cultural beacon in the archipelago. He articulated a dual focus on not just the music, but also on the safeguarding of the beautiful natural environment that serves as the backdrop for the festival. This commitment to the land complements FEM’s artistic endeavors.

In alignment, Rayco León remarked that FEM emerged as a celebration of culture, a catalyst for social transformation, and a staunch advocate for the environment. He declared it a festival imbued with a “unique spirit,” resonating with both locals and visitors alike.

An Eclectic Lineup

The festival promises an exciting and diverse roster of talent at its 20th edition, bringing together national, international, and local artists. Audiences can expect a vibrant mix of world music, featuring genres like afrobeat, flamenco, electronic, and Latin rhythms.

Confirmed acts include renowned names such as Antonio Carmona, Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, Eskorzo, Pongo, La Sra. Tomasa, Queralt Lahoz, Kumbia Boruka, and Chanela Clicka. Local representation is set to shine through talents like Marta Umpiérrez, the Arife project, and Woodhands, ensuring a wide array of musical expressions.

A Collaborative Effort

The Cabildo and City Council are keen on inviting attendees to fully embrace the festival while respecting and caring for the natural environment. Their acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication from various groups and teams involved in curating the cultural program and daytime festival emphasizes a community effort that goes beyond mere celebration.

This year’s FEM is shaping up to be a heartfelt homage to the past, a vibrant celebration of the present, and a hopeful vision for the future of music and culture in the Canary Islands.
