Faro Fuerteventura: A Cyclist’s Journey Across the Island

Faro Fuerteventura is more than just a cycling event; it’s a captivating journey that takes enthusiasts on an adventurous ride across the stunning landscapes of Fuerteventura. With an extensive route exceeding 135 kilometers, this iconic cicloturístico race, now in its fourth edition, was recently launched at the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. The event brought together key figures, including the Tourism Counselor Marlene Figueroa, Sports Counselor Luis González, and Gleiber Carreño, the Sports Councilor for La Oliva, alongside race director Ángel García.

Embracing Tourism and Sport

At the heart of the event’s presentation, Marlene Figueroa emphasized the importance of the race for both tourism and sports on the island. She articulated a vision of sustainable tourism that supports sports activities without compromising the island’s natural beauty. The Faro Fuerteventura race represents a synergy between tourism and sport, showcasing Fuerteventura’s unique appeal as a cycling destination.

Gleiber Carreño echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in hosting the starting line for this year’s event in La Oliva. He remarked on the collaboration between the local Sports and Tourism departments, highlighting the supportive network that allows such important events to thrive on the island.

A Celebration of Cycling Culture

Luis González, the Sports Counselor, shared his enthusiasm for maintaining the tradition of this successful road cycling event. He noted that the Faro Fuerteventura race has garnered significant participation from local and visiting athletes alike. With an expected turnout of around 450 participants, the event promises to be a thrilling experience. His encouragement for the organizers to continue enhancing the race reflects a shared vision for its future impact on Fuerteventura’s cycling culture.

Race director Ángel García conveyed his appreciation to the local authorities for their swift support, which has been a cornerstone in making this event possible. As he looked ahead to the influx of visitors—around 80% being from outside the island—he recognized the economic stimulation required by such events, benefiting local businesses and promoting the island as a prime sporting destination.

Voices from the Cycling Community

Adding a personal touch to the presentation, local athlete Yurena Alonso participated, voicing her gratitude on behalf of the Fuerteventura cycling community. Her involvement underscores the deep connection and excitement that residents feel about the race, fostering a sense of pride in showcasing their beautiful island to the world.

The Official Race Jersey

A highlight of the launch was the unveiling of the official race jersey, skillfully designed to reflect the breathtaking landscapes of Fuerteventura. Each detail of the jersey showcases quality craftsmanship, featuring an elastic band with silicone tape for the perfect fit and clean-cut sleeves, merging functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Two Routes, One Island

This year’s Faro Fuerteventura introduces two distinct routes catering to cyclists of varying skill levels:

  1. Long Distance Route – Corralejo: Covering 132.5 kilometers with an accumulated elevation gain of 1,590 meters, this challenging route promises a ride that tests participants’ endurance while filling them with awe as they navigate through the island’s diverse terrains.

  2. Short Distance Route – La Oliva: This more accessible option spans 76.5 kilometers, making it ideal for cyclists who want to experience the spirit of the event without the extreme challenge of the longer course.

Both routes offer participants a chance to ride through iconic landmarks such as Tindaya, Betancuria, and the towering dunes of Corralejo, ensuring a memorable adventure amidst natural beauty.

The Finish Line and Awards Ceremony

The exhilarating journey culminates at Costa Calma, specifically at the R2 Río Calma Hotel & SPA & Conference, where participants will cross the finish line and gather for the awards ceremony. This gathering not only celebrates the achievements of the cyclists but also serves as a communal event that unites residents and visitors in appreciation of athletic prowess and the island’s charm.

Registration and Organizational Support

Aspiring participants are encouraged to register for the event, with enrollment open until June 19. Details for registration can be found on the official Faro Fuerteventura website.

The event is orchestrated by DG Eventos, bolstered by the Instituto de Turismo de Fuerteventura, under the banners of “Fuerteventura Reserva de la Biosfera” and “Fuerteventura La playa de Canarias.” Additionally, the support from multiple local governments—including La Oliva, Pájara, Betancuria, and others—demonstrates a strong unified commitment to promoting Fuerteventura as a top-tier cycling destination.

Faro Fuerteventura is not just a race; it’s a celebration of the island’s landscape, sportsmanship, and a thriving community spirit. The anticipation for this year’s event is palpable, promising to deliver stunning vistas and shared experiences for all involved.
