A New Era in Healthcare: El Cotillo’s Local Health Center
This week marks a significant milestone for the residents of El Cotillo and El Roque as a newly inaugurated health facility prepares to open its doors. Director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Adasat Goya, visited the new local consultation center on August 12, accompanied by various local dignitaries, including the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Dolores García, and the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco. This moment was celebrated not only as an opening but as a fulfillment of a long-awaited promise to the community.
The new consultorio, located on Avenida de Los Lagos, is a spacious facility covering 160 square meters. It comprises essential health services, including a general medicine consultation room, a nursing consultation area, an administration office, treatment rooms, and storage areas. This well-designed setup is intended to facilitate efficient healthcare delivery in the growing local population.
The staffing at this center includes a dedicated team of a family doctor, a nurse, and an administrative assistant. These professionals are equipped to provide accessible primary healthcare, addressing the rising needs of the community due to ongoing population growth.
Prior to the establishment of this center, residents of El Cotillo and El Roque had to travel significant distances to obtain primary healthcare, heading to the Corralejo Health Center or other local facilities in La Oliva and Lajares. With the opening of this consultorio, around 1,200 residents can now access healthcare services much closer to home.

Addressing Historical Demand in El Cotillo
During his visit, Goya emphasized the significance of this new health facility, highlighting how it meets a “historical demand” from the local community that had previously been without its own dedicated healthcare center. As the demographic landscape continues to evolve in La Oliva, providing top-notch healthcare services is more critical than ever.
The newly launched center is part of broader plans to enhance healthcare infrastructure across the region, ensuring that every citizen has quick and easy access to necessary health services. The establishment of this center underscores a commitment to improving public health in a region that serves approximately 25,986 registered health cards, where about 4.5% belong to residents of El Cotillo and El Roque.
