We want to open the municipal market of Puerto del Rosario at the end of January 2026.

The Municipal Market: Economic and Social Engine of Puerto del Rosario

The Municipal Market in Puerto del Rosario is on the verge of a major transformation, with the local council’s head of Celebrations, Equality, and Commerce, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, calling it her most “exciting and ambitious” project of this legislative term. With the completion of a comprehensive rehabilitation project in June, the site – once the island’s first slaughterhouse – is being revitalized into a modern space to host 14 stalls.

As Gutiérrez explains during an interview on the program “La Voz de Fuerteventura,” four of these stalls will cater to restoration, while the remaining will focus on the sale of local products, emphasizing diversity in the offerings. Her vision is clear: the market will evolve into a vibrant gathering spot in Puerto del Rosario, a place to consume local goods, enjoy leisure activities, and foster social interaction.

What’s more, the market is strategically located as the only market in the entire archipelago facing the sea, making it a potential economic lifeblood for both residents and tourists alike. Gutiérrez hopes to finalize the complex bidding process by early next year, targeting an ambitious opening date of late January or early February 2026, despite the administrative hurdles yet to be navigated.

The successful bidders will not only be required to submit complete project proposals but will also be responsible for adapting their designated spaces over a period of ten years. Gutiérrez expresses her enthusiasm for commencing operations at this facility, asserting, “I believe we are not fully aware of the importance of this market for Puerto del Rosario.”

The Polygonal Tent: A Financial Relief for the Municipality

With the recent chaos leading up to the carnivals in the capital, the absence of a necessary tent – ultimately provided by the Town Hall of Pájara – highlighted the urgency of the situation. The council has recently initiated the procurement process for a large tent, which will join a smaller one already owned by the municipality and will be used across various towns and neighborhoods.

Previously, the rental costs for such tents had soared between 35,000 and 40,000 euros, compelling the council to invest in a permanent solution. “We decided to purchase the tent, ensuring we always have it available without relying on tenders or delays,” stated Gutiérrez.

The chosen model is polygonal and designed to host large-scale events with improved acoustics and safety features. Training will also be provided for municipal workers on the tent’s assembly, reducing dependence on external contractors. While it won’t be ready for this year’s celebrations, it’s anticipated to make its debut in the forthcoming carnivals.

Puerto del Rosario Celebrations: Festivities for Everyone

Celebration is in the air as Puerto del Rosario welcomes its Fiestas del Rosario 2025, featuring a program that brings together sports, culture, religious observance, and entertainment. The festivities kicked off with a heartfelt proclamation by the MERACAS group, marking the start of a week of cultural engagement designed to breathe life back into the capital.

This year’s events are set to add new elements like a Talent Show and the revival of the Silvestre de León fishing memorial, alongside beloved traditions such as the Offering to the Virgin and the Mosquito Color Fest race. A highlight concert by Macaco on October 6th, just before the main celebration day, promises to draw crowds and wrap up the festivities with enthusiasm.

Gutiérrez invites all citizens to join in the celebrations in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, urging community participation to ensure a memorable experience for everyone involved.
