This past Sunday, the tranquil waters of Corralejo served as the backdrop for the XXII Travesía a Nado de Isla de Lobos – Fuerteventura. After a year-long hiatus, the event returned with great enthusiasm, welcoming 181 swimmers from various corners of the globe. The occasion was skillfully orchestrated by the CD Herbania and Club Charco Herbania Atlético, with vital support from the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura.

Perfect Conditions for an Eager Crowd

Participants enjoyed ideal weather conditions, transforming the swim into an exhilarating experience. The smooth execution of the event led many swimmers to achieve outstanding personal bests, demonstrating not just physical prowess but also a renewed passion for open-water swimming. With the sun shining and the sea calm, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as competitors prepared to make their mark on this storied course.

Race Highlights: Record-Breaking Performances

As the clock ticked on, the first swimmers emerged from the waves to cross the finish line in the iconic 3,400-meter stretch between Isla de Lobos and the coast of Corralejo. Jorge García Moreno led the pack with an impressive time of 39 minutes and 17 seconds, followed closely by Tomás Carrascosa Hester at 40 minutes and 48 seconds, and David Gonzalez Sánchez at 44 minutes and 12 seconds in the men’s category.

In the women’s category, Ainhoa Santana Flores made waves with a remarkable time of 46 minutes and 55 seconds. She was joined on the podium by Laura García Cervantes, who clocked in at 53 minutes and 8 seconds, and María Tatiana Mujica González, finishing with a time of 54 minutes and 4 seconds. Their performances showcased not only speed but also determination, captivating everyone in attendance.

A Pioneering Contest in Open Water

This year’s event also marked the first leg of the IV Copa de Canarias de Aguas Abiertas. Notably, Alejandro Elvira Glaubitz of Club CD Nonadamos emerged victorious in the men’s category with a finish time of 46 minutes and 22 seconds. For the women, Laura García Cervantes, also representing Club CD Nonadamos, secured her place at the top with a time of 53 minutes and 8 seconds. This competitive edge added an exhilarating dimension to the gathering, enhancing the swimmers’ experiences.

A Community Driven by Passion

Inma Díaz, the president of Club Deportivo Herbania, expressed immense pride in the successful execution of the event. “It’s a point of pride for us that, without a professional event organization and relying solely on unpaid volunteers, we were able to bring this swim to life. It proves that with determination and willingness, we can promote both amateur and federated sports,” she stated. Her words underscore the spirit of community that resonates deeply at this event.

Celebrating Sport and Tourism

Jero Lozano, the sports councilor for the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva, shared his enthusiasm for the event’s tradition. He noted, “The Travesía a Nado has reached its 22nd edition and is solidifying its reputation as a tourist sporting event. The relationship between sport and tourism enriches the attractions of La Oliva.” His acknowledgment of the partnership between local government and sporting organizations highlights the collective effort in fostering such enriching experiences.
