From March 23 to June 30, Fuerteventura will come alive with the flavors and traditions of its local cuisine as the first edition of the Fuerteventura Tapas Route takes center stage. This initiative, organized by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura in collaboration with six municipalities, aims to enhance the island’s tourism by highlighting its gastronomic products. The event was officially announced at a press conference held on February 21, attended by key figures including the Cabildo president, Marcial Morales, and other local authorities.

Celebrating Local Gastronomy

Marcial Morales emphasized the event’s focus on fostering local entrepreneurship, acknowledging the vital role that gastronomy plays in the island’s economy. He stated, “This initiative seeks to continue adding efforts, initiatives, and enthusiasm to the local business sector, which is the foundation of the island’s economy.” The Tapas Route is more than just a culinary event; it reflects the community’s dedication to working together toward a common goal—to promote the rich flavors of Fuerteventura.

A Unique Culinary Experience Across Multiple Municipalities

The Tapas Route will take place across several municipalities, including Tuineje, Pájara, Puerto del Rosario, Antigua, Betancuria, and La Oliva. José Juan Herrera Martel, the local commerce councilor, noted that this event is intended to encourage movement between the different municipalities, allowing participants to explore the unique offerings of each area. Herrera highlighted the significance of gastronomy in the tourist sector, asserting, “We understand that gastronomy is essential within the tourism sector, which is the main driver of our economy.”

Recognizing Local Talent and Creativity

Nicolás Gutiérrez, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, expressed his support for the idea of ‘insularizing’ the tapas route, envisioning it as a long-lasting tradition that highlights the island and its culinary professionals. He stated, “I congratulate the Cabildo and those who proposed this initiative, hoping that it becomes a permanent feature that fosters joint actions and elevates our local cuisine.”

A Competitive Spirit

Participating establishments are invited to craft two distinct tapas—one cold and one hot. Each municipality will host its own competition, allowing patrons to choose their five favorite tapas in both categories. A jury will then taste the finalists and award gold, silver, and bronze prizes for the best cold and hot tapas in each municipality. The “Tapa Platino,” chosen from all the gold winners, will represent Fuerteventura in the National Pinchos Competition in Valladolid.

The Tapas Route presents an excellent value for participants, with each tapa priced at just €2.50, including a drink.
