Examining the Teacher Examinations in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands recently witnessed a significant influx of aspiring educators as the regional Ministry of Education, led by Poli Suárez, launched an extensive series of teacher examinations. This initiative, marking a crucial step for those looking to secure teaching positions in the archipelago, is a testament to the dedication and ambition of individuals seeking to contribute to the educational landscape.
A Record Participation
This year, a staggering 8,235 candidates participated in the teacher examinations, spread across 25 educational centers situated on five islands. The wide range of positions being contested includes roles for Primary School Teachers, Secondary School Teachers, Language School Instructors, Art and Design School Faculty, and Music Conservatory Teachers.
The breakdown of participation showcases the competitive nature of the examinations:
- 6,686 candidates competing for 686 primary school positions.
- 833 candidates vying for 192 secondary school openings.
- 162 candidates aiming for seven language school slots.
- 180 aspirants contesting 15 positions in the art and design sector.
- Meanwhile, the music conservatory examinations attracted 374 participants for 23 available positions, including roles for both Music and Performing Arts Professors.
Enhanced Examination Process
A notable change this year is the requirement for candidates to submit their teaching plans in person prior to the examination. After presenting their plans, candidates must engage in a reading session before the judging panel. Mónica Ramírez, the Director General for Personnel and Teacher Training, emphasized the meticulous preparation involved in this process, expressing gratitude to the panels and administrative teams who facilitate such a large-scale undertaking. This innovative approach aims to enhance the assessment quality and ensure candidates are thoroughly prepared for the challenges ahead.
Diverse Locations for Accessibility
The examination process is structured to provide ease of access for candidates throughout the archipelago. The chosen locations include:
- Gran Canaria
- Tenerife

- Fuerteventura
- La Palma
In Lanzarote, the Blas Cabrera Felipe Secondary School will host examinations for specialties like Early Childhood Education and Primary Education. Similarly, Fuerteventura’s Puerto del Rosario Secondary School will have sessions for those very same specialties, while La Palma will conduct tests in the Alonso Pérez Díaz Secondary School.
The capital islands have garnered the majority of the candidates, with various venues set up across the islands. In Gran Canaria, examinations will occur at multiple noteworthy locations, including Ana Luisa Benítez Secondary School, and Gran Canaria School of Art and Higher Design among others. Tenerife will also play host to its share of test sites, including the La Laguna Secondary School and César Manrique Integrated Vocational Training Center.
Structure of the Examination Day
The examination day commenced with the initial tests for the Primary Teacher category, followed by sessions for the Art and Design Schools and the Official Language Schools. The structure of the day was meticulously planned to ensure smooth coordination between various categories.
As the morning session concluded, the afternoon was earmarked for continued assessments involving practical scenarios for primary teachers and corresponding tests for Secondary School Teachers. The extensive organization underlying the event mobilizes substantial personnel, including tribunal members, school management teams, administrative staff, and numerous supporting roles across the different testing venues.
A Step Towards Future Educational Excellence
As these examinations unfold, the passion and determination of the candidates reflect a broader commitment to enhancing the quality of education within the Canary Islands. The efforts invested in organizing this event emphasize the importance of educational reform and stability in a landscape that demands highly skilled professionals.
In this vibrant educational climate, the outcomes of these examinations will not only impact the careers of over 8,000 aspiring teachers but also shape the future of countless students across the archipelago.
