Enhancing Water Infrastructure in the Canary Islands
The Government of the Canary Islands, under the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion, and Water Affairs, is taking significant strides to improve the water cycle across the islands. Major Funding for La Graciosa
One of the most substantial investments is directed towards La Graciosa, which will receive a total of €2.3 million allocated for the renewal of its water supply pipeline. This strategic funding is in addition to the €1.5 million already earmarked in the 2026 budget.
This project was recognized as of “general interest” back in January 2025, underscoring its crucial role for the island’s infrastructure. However, the implementation of these initiatives is not without challenges. Financing Vallehermoso’s Water Management
Another noteworthy project is the funding allocated for Vallehermoso in La Gomera. An additional €1.4 million has been designated to complete the financing for the drainage management of the Vallehermoso ravine. The entire project has a budget of €4.1 million, of which €2.7 million was already accounted for in the current year’s budget.
The planned interventions focus on improving safety in the area and creating new public spaces, which will not only manage water more effectively but also enhance community wellbeing. This multifaceted approach is crucial for both immediate needs and long-term sustainability.
Committing to El Cotillo’s Future
El Cotillo, located in Fuerteventura, is also set to benefit from a reserved fund of €712,577 for its sanitation and wastewater treatment projects. This funding complements the €1.2 million already included in the 2026 budget, demonstrating a strong commitment to continuing essential work throughout the current year.
Valued at over €3 million, the El Cotillo project aims to update and expand the existing sanitation infrastructure to meet the current demographic realities. This upgrade is pivotal in ensuring that the facilities can adequately serve an expanding population while maintaining health and environmental standards.
