El XVIII Festival Internacional de Blues y Jazz Arrives in Corralejo
The charming coastal town of Corralejo in Fuerteventura is set to embrace the soulful sounds of blues and jazz as it kicks off the 18th International Blues and Jazz Festival today. This vibrant event, filled with local flavor, promises to be an unforgettable celebration of music that appeals to many.
Opening Night Highlights
This evening’s festivities will commence with performances from three local bands: Mestura, Sweet Swamp, and the Corralejo Blues Band. The concerts will take place at the specially arranged stage on Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen starting at 8:00 PM. Each group showcases the exceptional talent that Fuerteventura has to offer, ensuring an electrifying opening to the festival.
Sweet Swamp: A Dream Realized
One of the standout local acts, Sweet Swamp, formed in 2020, consists of violinist and vocalist Elsa Medina and guitarist David Llop. They are known for their unique sound inspired by Swamp Blues, a sub-genre characterized by its laid-back rhythms and vibrant atmosphere. According to Elsa, performing at this festival is a “dream come true,” as they share the stage with other talented musicians.
Sweet Swamp typically performs as a duo but will be enhanced by David Casasus on harmonica and Antonio Valdés on percussion for this event. This configuration significantly enriches their sound, featuring special pieces that incorporate traditional washboard music, which has historical ties to the laundry days of early American blues.
Mestura: A Fusion of Cultures
Mestura is another musical gem hailing from La Oliva, comprised of four neighbors with a rich blend of musical backgrounds. Their dedication to jazz, blues, and funk creates a magical fusion that resonates with their audience. Mestura aims to convey spontaneous energy during their performances, allowing for natural improvisations that enhance the concert experience.
The Corralejo Blues Band: Local Gems
The Corralejo Blues Band brings together seasoned musicians who have made a significant mark on the local music scene. Their motivation to participate in this festival stems from a desire to create a space for local talent to shine, showcasing the creativity and artistry that Corralejo offers.
National and International Acts
The festival doesn’t stop at local talent. It will feature renowned national and international artists over the coming days. On Friday, October 25, the Blues Night will spotlight acts like La Perra Blanco, Zakiya Hooker, and Laretha Weathersby. Zakiya Hooker, in particular, carries the legacy of her legendary father, John Lee Hooker, and is sure to deliver a captivating performance.
Following the blues celebration, Saturday, October 26, is dedicated to Jazz Night, featuring compelling performances from Groovin’ Jazz, O Sister!, and the Marialy Pacheco Trio.
A Commitment to Blues and Jazz
The Ayuntamiento of La Oliva, through its Department of Culture, continues to demonstrate a robust commitment to promoting niche musical events like this festival. Elsa Medina echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of showcasing blues music in a region where it’s not as mainstream compared to other genres. “When the municipality continues to support this style, it’s something to be grateful for, especially when local musicians are included,” she shared.
As the festival unfolds, attendees can anticipate a rich tapestry of sounds and stories, linking the locals to broader musical traditions. The unique atmosphere of Corralejo and the eclectic mix of local and visiting artists will create an exciting backdrop for a weekend of unforgettable performances.
