Spain Tourism Continues Growth in International Visitor Spending
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released a compelling report indicating that global international visitor spending is set to reach an impressive US$2.02 trillion by 2025. This marks a year-on-year increase of 3.2%, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and signaling a robust recovery in the travel sector.
Spain stands out in this recovery, generating €115.1 billion (approximately US$130.1 billion) in international visitor spending in 2025. This positions Spain as the third-largest destination globally, trailing only the United States and China. The country is expected to welcome around 96.8 million international visitors, with an average spending of US$1,344 per traveler, highlighting its allure as a premier travel destination.
In comparison, Europe as a whole is projected to see international visitor spending reach about US$835 billion across 782 million arrivals, translating to an average spend of around US$1,068 per traveler. These figures underscore Spain’s ability to attract not only a high volume of visitors but also a greater level of spending compared to the broader European market.
The WTTC attributes Spain’s impressive tourism performance to a combination of factors, including effective collaboration between public and private sectors, significant investments in transport connectivity and infrastructure, and ongoing efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience. This multifaceted approach has positioned Spain as a leader in the global tourism landscape.
Looking ahead, international visitor spending in Spain is forecasted to rise further to €121.1 billion (around US$136.9 billion) in 2026, reflecting an annual growth rate of 5.3%. This optimistic outlook is bolstered by the country’s commitment to improving travel infrastructure and visitor services, ensuring that Spain remains a top choice for international travelers.
Moreover, the WTTC’s research highlights the importance of digital identity systems, biometric technology, and streamlined visa processes in facilitating international travel. These advancements are crucial for improving traveler movement across destinations, making travel more accessible and efficient.

Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, emphasized that international visitor spending has now exceeded pre-pandemic levels globally. Destinations that invest in connectivity and enhance the traveler experience are witnessing stronger economic returns from tourism. She noted that Spain continues to achieve a higher average international visitor spending per traveler than the European average, reinforcing its status as a leading destination.
