Pioneering Biodiversity Preservation in Fuerteventura

The Majorero Environmental Department has embarked on a groundbreaking project aimed at preserving biodiversity through the enhancement and maintenance of water bodies such as ponds, reservoirs, and aquifers. This innovative initiative kicked off at the Gavias del Cárcel estate in Lajares, located within the municipality of La Oliva. Unique to the Canary Islands, the project employs advanced materials previously utilized only in Lanzarote.

Focus on Endangered Species

At the heart of the Gavias del Cárcel project is a commitment to safeguarding the Canary hubara and the habitat of steppe birds. This endeavor targets an area of approximately 1,000 square meters, which includes a 150-square-meter watering hole. This designated stopover, feeding, and resting point for avifauna plays a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and preserving wildlife in the region.

Carlos Rodríguez, the island’s environmental counselor, highlighted that this initiative will extend to other locations in Fuerteventura, fostering biodiversity not just for birds, but also benefiting species like rabbits, partridges, and various other wildlife forms. The introduction of native plant species will further enhance the environment, creating natural refuges for avifauna.

Urgent Maintenance and Restoration

The area at Gavias del Cárcel had become deteriorated due to the accumulation of soil and vegetation. This necessitated urgent intervention, involving cleanup, waterproofing, and measures to support the feeding of sensitive bird species. The project also includes planting initiatives to restore local flora, which are essential for a thriving ecosystem.

Investment in Sustainable Solutions

With an investment exceeding €30,000, the construction process encompasses multiple phases, from initial layout to the waterproofing of the pond. The incorporation of innovative materials provides an efficient solution, with a lifespan potentially reaching up to a century for controlling erosion and suppressing weeds. This approach allows for quicker installation than conventional alternatives while ensuring the visuals integrate harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Additionally, supplementary activities, such as irrigation installation and preparation of the surrounding terrain, are planned.

Key Habitat for the Canary Hubara

Gavias del Cárcel serves as a critical refuge for the protection of the Canary hubara and other steppe bird species. Since 1985, the Plan for the Recovery of the Canary Hubara has been dedicated to preserving this endemic species and its habitat, emphasizing the protection of essential areas, increased surveillance, and habitat restoration efforts.

Threats and Conservation Efforts

The Canary hubara faces numerous threats, including habitat destruction and disturbances in breeding areas. These challenges accentuate the need for urgent conservation interventions to ensure their survival. Categorized as endangered in the National Catalog of Threatened Species, the hubara’s plight underscores the importance of dedicated conservation efforts like those being implemented at Gavias del Cárcel.

Through initiatives like this, Fuerteventura is taking significant steps toward preserving its unique biodiversity, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship that can serve as a model for other regions.
