Commitment to Heritage: The Government of the Canary Islands Takes Action
The Government of the Canary Islands has taken a bold step towards the preservation and revitalization of the historical ensembles scattered across the archipelago. In an exciting initiative, they have announced the establishment of an Observatory, aimed at creating a permanent space for collaboration, learning, and community engagement.
A Gathering of Experts
This commitment was revealed following the closure of the First Meeting of Historical Ensembles of the Canary Islands, which was held recently at the Archaeological Museum of Fuerteventura (MAF), bringing together over 20 specialists. The gathering allowed for rich dialogue, sharing of insights, and the creation of the Betancuria Declaration, a pivotal document that addresses the future of the region’s historical sites.
A Pioneering Shift in Policy
Miguel Ángel Clavijo, the Director General of Culture and Cultural Heritage for the Canary Government, emphasized the importance of this moment, stating, “Betancuria will mark a before and after.” This sentiment encapsulates the ambition of the local government to lead a new chapter in the management of historical sites, prioritizing collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a shared vision for the future.
A New Era of Collaboration
The Government has articulated a commitment to ushering in a new era for the historical ensembles of the archipelago. This commitment focuses on cooperation and a mutual understanding of how to best preserve this vital cultural heritage. The government is eager to foster stronger ties between the local administration, island councils, and municipalities.
Key Initiatives for Better Heritage Management
To make these goals a reality, the Directorate General of Culture and Cultural Heritage has launched three key initiatives aimed at improving the management of Cultural Heritage Assets (BIC) and enhancing the connection between citizens and their cultural legacy. Notably, this proposal is being crafted alongside the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Town Council of Betancuria.
Establishing the Observatory
At the heart of these initiatives is the creation of the Observatory. This entity will function as a permanent venue for collaboration and mutual support among various stakeholders, including the Government of the Canary Islands, the island councils, and local municipalities. The primary goal of the Observatory is to serve as a foundation for informed decision-making and the development of future public policies.
The Observatory will also act as a network for sharing best practices, addressing common challenges, and producing collective knowledge about the region’s historical assets.
Conducting a Comprehensive Diagnostic
Additionally, the Heritage division of the Department of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture will undertake a comprehensive diagnostic study. This study aims to create an updated profile of the current patrimonial, social, economic, tourist, and territorial landscapes of these historic spaces.
The findings from this analysis will form the basis for developing targeted strategies to enhance the preservation of historical ensembles, stimulate their revitalization, and solidify their roles as environments of identity and sustainable development.
Promoting Cultural Engagement
As part of the efforts to connect citizens with their heritage, the government is also focused on developing new outreach tools. Among these plans is a digital platform designed to centralize and promote activities aimed at fostering cultural dynamism. This initiative includes the creation of heritage routes that will bring the rich cultural narratives of the regions closer to residents, thereby strengthening their ties to the community and its history.
This multifaceted approach represents a commitment not just to conservation, but to the active engagement of the community in preserving their cultural identity. Through collaborative efforts and innovative strategies, the Government of the Canary Islands is paving the way for a bright and sustainable future for its historical ensembles.
