Presentation of the XXVI edition of the Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos-Fuerteventura.

The picturesque Hautes-Alpes of Spain are preparing for one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year—the XXVI edition of the Travesía a Nado Isla de Lobos – Fuerteventura. Scheduled for Sunday, October 19, this event has gained a reputation for its breathtaking scenery and spirited competition, but it’s the recent announcement that has everyone buzzing: all 280 participant slots were filled in just 18 minutes.

Organized by the Ayuntamiento de La Oliva in collaboration with Gleiber Carreño, the Department of Sports, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the Club Deportivo Herbania, this event showcases the best of open-water swimming. Participants will swim the stunning stretch of water separating Isla de Lobos from Corralejo, competing not just for personal glory, but also for a noble cause. Proceeds from the event will support the Spanish Association Against Cancer, demonstrating the event’s commitment to community service and awareness.

Community and Commitment: Representatives Speak Out

Isaí Blanco, the mayor of La Oliva, highlights the dual benefits of the event—promoting both sports and tourism. “The Travesía a Nado is a competition that keeps growing and solidifying its standing as a benchmark in open-water swimming events. It not only places La Oliva in the spotlight as a preferred sports destination but also emphasizes the event’s altruistic nature supporting the invaluable work of the Spanish Association Against Cancer,” he elaborated.

Meanwhile, Gleiber Carreño, the local sports councillor, shared his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “When we think of October, we think of the Travesía a Nado. Every year, it surprises us not just with record registrants but also with the quickness in which those slots disappear. It’s a wild experience that captures the interest of athletes both locally and from abroad.”

The enthusiasm doesn’t stop there. The president of the Club Deportivo Herbania remarked, “The Travesía isn’t just a sporting competition; it’s a meeting point between the sea, sports, and people—both local and visitors, all drawn to Fuerteventura for this unique experience. With participants hailing from various parts of the globe—including seasoned swimmers over 80 demonstrating that passion knows no age—this event is firmly established as a key highlight in Canarian sports.”

This year’s swim promises not only to be a test of speed and endurance but also a celebration of community spirit and charitable action, as swimmers plunge into the stunning azure waters, navigating the challenges and joys of open-water racing in one of the most scenic settings imaginable.
