Investment in El Cotillo’s Fishing Harbor: A Significant Step Forward
On Monday, the Canary Government approved an extension of credit amounting to €200,000 earmarked for the enhancement of the El Cotillo Fishing Shelter, located in the municipality of La Oliva. This funding is a crucial part of the “Conservation and Improvement of Infrastructure in Fuerteventura” project, aimed at executing essential improvements requested by the local Fishermen’s Brotherhood.
Comprehensive Improvements Planned
The enhancements will be spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility. The proposed works include upgrading access points, resurfacing the roads with asphalt, improving the pier infrastructure, and implementing other necessary changes to the facilities serving the fishing sector. The government cites “economic circumstances” as a justification for this investment, indicating that the funds will come from unused budget allocations from the current fiscal year.
Administrative Steps Toward Execution
The Canary Government clarified that the approval of this credit marks an important administrative step before actual construction can commence. The plans will be overseen by the General Directorate of Fisheries and the Deputy Ministry of Infrastructure. According to government representatives, this initiative aims to modernize the fishing shelters across Fuerteventura, thereby bolstering both the economic and social vitality of the Canary coastline.
Addressing Local Fishermen’s Needs
The Majorera Assembly–Canary Coalition has expressed strong support for the commitment from the Canary Government to provide €200,000 for the improvement of El Cotillo’s harbor. They describe this action as “essential” in meeting the long-standing demands of the local fishing community. During discussions in Puerto del Rosario with Narvay Quintero, the regional minister for agriculture and fisheries, local representatives, including councilors Juan José Rodríguez and Rubén González, highlighted the pressing need for a safe harbor that guarantees the protection of fishing vessels and sustains fishing activities.
Detailed Plan for Upgrades
The project outlines a series of upgrades including the resurfacing and conditioning of the breakwater, enhancements to the fishing ramps and their access gates, the installation of a new launching trolley, improvements to the diesel storage facility, and updates to the signage. Councilor Rubén González remarked that these improvements would provide significant benefits to professionals, athletes, and casual users of the harbor, allowing for optimal conditions for daily activities.
Local Community Engagement
Juan José Rodríguez emphasized that this initiative directly responds to the residents of El Cotillo, who will finally have access to adequate infrastructure. This development is expected to enhance the competitiveness and safety of profession for those connected to maritime activities.
In summary, the €200,000 investment signifies a proactive approach by the Canary Government to elevate the standards of local fishing infrastructure, thereby supporting the livelihoods of fishermen and contributing to the broader economic health of the community. The focus on meeting specific demands from local stakeholders underpins a more extensive strategy to foster sustainable development along the picturesque coastline of Fuerteventura.
