Celebrating Diversity and Pride in Puerto del Rosario
This year, the City Council of Equality, Diversity, and LGBTI of Puerto del Rosario is making headlines with its impressive recognition of individuals and organizations that highlight the importance of diversity. These honors culminate in a celebration dedicated to the LGBTIQ+ community, reflecting local efforts to foster inclusivity.
Several prestigious awards will be presented during this remarkable event: the Commitment to Diversity Award will be bestowed upon the City Council, while the 2026 Rainbow Memory Award will recognize the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory along with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. Additionally, Pedro Esquivel Gallardo will receive the poignant “You Are Our Pride” award, a deeply personal acknowledgment of his contributions.
In tandem with these accolades, the association will also unveil the “Pink Brick 2026,” symbolizing a public statement against policies perceived to be anti-woke or hostile to LGBTIQ+ rights. This award serves to bring visibility to discourses and actions that, in the association’s opinion, undermine diversity and erode hard-won rights.
A March for Pride on June 28
The centerpiece of the Fuerteventura LGBTIQ+ Pride – Be Free 2026 celebrations is the Pride March scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at 11:00 AM. The march will commence at Playa de los Pozos in Puerto del Rosario and conclude at the façade of the Cabildo Insular de Fuerteventura. This date coincides with the International Day of LGBTI Pride, making it even more significant.
The procession will take place under the powerful slogan, “Fuerteventura against hate and LGBTIphobia. Taking to the streets with pride!” This message captures the essence of the event, emphasizing the community’s commitment to decades of struggle against discrimination and their determination to protect the rights achieved in the face of rising hate speech.
A Rich Program of Activities
For the two weeks leading up to the Pride March, ALTIHAY Fuerteventura has curated a diverse calendar of cultural, sports, and leisure activities. These events aim to engage the community and foster a spirit of celebration. Attendees can stay informed about the full lineup through the organization’s active social media channels, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in this vibrant celebration.
The Significance of Pride in Today’s Society
Carla Soto García, the president of ALTIHAY Fuerteventura, emphasizes the relevance of these celebrations in the current social climate, where hateful rhetoric and regressions in rights are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. In her heartfelt statement, she reflects:
“Pride is the living memory of those who came before us. It’s a reminder of the first marches, the raids, and the broken silences. Today, in the face of setbacks and increasing hate speech, we remain resilient, visible, and vigilant. Because our future is not written with fear, but with dignity, freedom, and all forms of being and existing. One more reason to gather and celebrate together in the Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 25, and the Pride March on Sunday, June 28.”
Her words resonate deeply, embodying the spirit of unity and strength that defines this year’s Pride celebrations, urging all to participate actively and celebrate diversity with pride.
With a rich tapestry of activities and heartfelt recognition, this year’s LGBTIQ+ Pride – Be Free Fuerteventura 2026 stands as a testament to the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance. It is a vibrant call to action for all community members to come together and assert their rights, while also commemorating the struggles of those who fought before them. Whether through attending the march or participating in events, everyone is invited to join in and support this significant movement for equality.
