The new housing development, known as “Promoción Don Quijote,” comes with an impressive investment exceeding 6.8 million euros, funded by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and Next Generation EU funds. This financial backing symbolizes a strong commitment to rejuvenating the public housing sector, which has seen a notable decline in recent years.

On Thursday, dignitaries gathered to lay the first stone of the building, which will offer 47 protected housing units. Among those present were Pablo Rodríguez, the Councillor for Public Works, Housing, and Mobility of the Canary Government, and Pino de León, the Director of the Canarian Housing Institute (ICAVI). Their participation underscores the importance of this project in addressing the longstanding housing issues faced by the community.

Collaborative Efforts Across All Levels

The inauguration event highlighted the collaborative spirit among various governmental bodies. María Jesús de la Cruz, the Director of the State Administration in Fuerteventura, remarked on the importance of teamwork across local, regional, and state levels to tackle the housing deficit in the Canary Islands. “While this development is just one step,” she noted, “it represents significant progress toward solving our pressing housing challenges.”

Lola García, the President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the investment of 53 million euros for housing initiatives across the province. This investment strategy not only supports the construction of new homes but also focuses on rehabilitating existing structures, ensuring a comprehensive approach to housing solutions.

A Long-Awaited Solution for Residents

For many residents of Puerto del Rosario, this project embodies hope and a tangible resolution to their housing needs. Mayor David de Vera expressed recognition of how eagerly families have awaited the opportunity to access dignified living spaces. Details of the Housing Project

Strategically located on the streets of Don Quijote, Sorolla, and Dulcinea, the new public housing complex encompasses an overall investment of 6,816,577.85 euros. Various public administrations fund the initiative, with specific contributions organized as follows: 257,047.06 euros from European funds (MIVAU-PRTR-Next Generation), 6,194,941.03 euros from the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, and 449,597.73 euros from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.

The project stands out for its comprehensive design, featuring one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom units. Notably, it will also include a six-bedroom residence among the three-bedroom listings, catering to larger families. Additionally, two of the apartments are adapted for individuals with reduced mobility, further underscoring the commitment to inclusivity.

The new building will be equipped with essential amenities, including parking spaces, storage units, and fully equipped kitchens in each residence. A standout feature of this project is its commitment to sustainability, as it boasts an energy efficiency certification “A,” signifying excellent performance in both energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
