First Stone Laid for 47 Affordable Rental Homes in Puerto del Rosario with an Investment of Nearly Seven Million Euros

The vibrant municipality of Puerto del Rosario is witnessing a significant surge in construction activities, extending far beyond the well-known streets of Don Quijote. The president has confirmed that a total of 35 homes in Bernegal are already assigned, with an additional 24 housing units planned in Rosa Vila. These developments add to the ongoing construction projects within the urban core of Corralejo, located in the neighboring municipality of La Oliva. Garcia emphasized the Cabildo’s efforts to collaborate with other municipalities, aiming to expand housing availability throughout the island, with a particular focus on rehabilitating existing housing stock.

A Focus on Public Housing in the Canary Islands

The regional government of the Canary Islands, represented by regional counsellor Pablo Rodríguez, is making bold commitments towards public housing. Rodriguez stated emphatically that the government has “prioritized housing like never before, mobilizing public instruments and funds to address the housing emergency, which is the foremost concern for families in the Canaries.” According to Rodríguez, there are plans to construct over 2,000 public housing units across the Archipelago, with further announcements expected to come by the end of the year regarding a new development in Rosa Vila in Puerto del Rosario.

David de Vera, the mayor of Puerto del Rosario, expressed his enthusiasm for the commencement of these construction projects, positioning them within a broader strategy. He remarked, “Today, we celebrate the groundbreaking at Don Quijote, marking the beginning of other projects that have already been assigned and will deliver the much-needed housing solutions to meet the social demand in Fuerteventura.” The regional director of the AGE, María Jesús de la Cruz, highlighted this initiative as “an exemplary model of collaboration between various administrations” in response to the housing deficit afflicting both the Canaries and, more specifically, Fuerteventura.

Innovative Housing Design Focused on Energy Efficiency

The building envisioned on Don Quijote Street will be the epitome of modern living, offering features such as a garage, storage rooms, and fully equipped kitchens in each of the 47 residential units. The planned distribution includes a variety of living arrangements to cater to diverse needs: 5 one-bedroom homes, 10 two-bedroom apartments, 26 three-bedroom units (including 2 designed for individuals with reduced mobility), 6 four-bedroom homes, and 1 six-bedroom residence. This thoughtful layout reflects a commitment to meet varying household sizes and dynamics, including larger families.

Moreover, the design criteria incorporate principles of energy efficiency and CO₂ emission reduction, aligning with standards required by European NextGeneration funds that co-finance the project. Initiating this housing development is a pivotal step in addressing the institutional response to the ongoing housing crisis, which all participating authorities acknowledge as a pressing social issue for both Fuerteventura and the larger Canary Islands.
